Niuean hula music .. the rich sounds from the “Rock” of the pacific

Niuean hula music in riches its culture and traditions of Niue, even though the very traditional songs are not accompanied by music imstruments. A wooden drum called the palau or nafa curved from the trunk of the selie tree is the main implement of hula music , to produce the beat required for performances

This wooden log drum is very similar to the Cook Island kaara and is played in the same manner with two sticks but at a more slower marching type beat. This drum beat music could be compared to that of the Samoan drum beat style.

Hula Dancing

Tame is a main style of Niue dance normally backed up by ukulele, guitar, and often a keyboard as part of Niuean hula music , this type of dance is for very important occassions such as weddings, opening and many other events. Male and female dances both perform the tame , the woman in a sitting position and the men standing, but do not be miss lead this does not have to do with the “I am Man, you are Woman” issue, Niue society is an equal opportunity culture.
