Kuki ukulele music, the old or the new music .. no problems for this uke!

Kuki ukulele music has become more prominent in the last 20 years since its conception from Tahiti; I am talking about the 8-string Tahitian version of the ukulele adopted by the Cook Islands.

Before that the most common ukulele was a 4-string made out of coconut shells that had a high pitch tone to it. You could use one or two shells to build the body of the uke, and then add the neck and strings (nylon). I have even seen nowadays pieces of PVC piping cut out and glued to a piece of ply to create the body of a 4-string ukulele.

But back to Cook Island (kuki) ukulele music, yes the sound and strumming can be confused with the Tahitian style of playing, but keep in mind this instrument of outstanding sound quality was introduced from there.

I can say that the kuki ukulele music style is different to that of the Tahitian model, with the adaption of a microphone to the sound area of the uke, you can generate a bigger sound explosion for as far as the ear can hear. But the passion and want of giving people and experience they will not forget is the same, and should be the same with whatever musical device is played.

The kuki ukulele style is incorporated in what we call string bands, which consist of a guitar player, one ukulele lead player, one ukulele rhythm player and bass guitar. This unique posse of musicians can play basically any genre of music from pop, rock, reggae, but mainly Cook Island music.

The most significant instrument besides the common guitar is the ukulele and its amazing tempo and outrageous sound it puts out, you have to hear it to believe it?
