Hula drum orchestra .. sounds of Polynesia curved from the earth!Hula drum orchestra .. what is it that makes this type of orchestra so unique in the music industry of today and yester year. It is solely the fact that this form of orchestra was grown in the depths of the un-growth, in the shadows of the sun, in areas of the south pacific in a tropical forest. The trees that produced these instruments of unreal music can grow to massive sizes, and with this comes the first ingredients in the manufacturing of a wooden orchestra. The main part of the tree used is the trunk because this is the largest area of girth with the richest wood content required. The drums are cut from trees only found in the south pacific island regions, these pieces are of different size requirements, depending if they are for the pate lead log drum, or for the other three or four wooden pate’s. The other difference with the hula drum orchestra is that the log drums are carved out, tuned by hollowing out a deeper or not so deep channel in the drum, then played then tuned again if need be for the right sound desires. Where the base ( pau ) and the bongo are hollowed out then covered with animal skin (normally goat),this creates the sounding boards for their music purpose, these two drums are then tuned by a ring brace and rope, to tighten and stretch the skin to get just the right sound tension required. The orchestra designer has completed his task, he has grown and orchestra from the soil, treated it, shaped it and tuned it, this journey has come to its end.
